About this destination
San Cristobal, capital of Táchira state, is a vibrant Andean city in the westernmost part of Venezuela, near the Colombian border. Founded in 1561, it is "The City of Cordiality" and an important commercial, cultural, and sports center. The San Sebastian International Fair, in January, is one of the most important fairs in Venezuela. For almost a month the city transforms with bullfights, concerts, agricultural, artisan, and livestock exhibitions, attracting visitors from across the country and from Colombia. The architectural heritage includes San Cristobal Cathedral, the Táchira Athenaeum, the UNET Rectorate building, and numerous colonial mansions. La Carolina Metropolitan Park and the Alto de Capacho viewpoint offer views of the city and Andean mountains. Tachira cuisine is unique: Andean hallacas, morcón, Andean chicha, almojábanas, paledonias, and high-altitude coffee. Proximity to Colombia enriches the offer and access routes.
