About this destination
Maracay, known as "The Garden City of Venezuela", is the capital of Aragua state and one of the most important cities in the central region. Founded in 1701, it combines history, nature, and modernity at the foot of the Coastal Mountain Range. Henri Pittier National Park, Venezuela's first national park (1937), is Maracay's natural treasure: over 107,800 hectares with more than 580 bird species, cloud forests, tropical rainforest, and pristine beaches. It is one of the best birdwatching destinations on the continent. The beaches of Choroní, Chuao, Cepe, and Cata offer crystal-clear waters and a traditional atmosphere; Choroní stands out for its colonial architecture, world-famous cacao, and Afro-Venezuelan drums. The city preserves vestiges from the era of General Juan Vicente Gómez. The Maracay Bullring, designed by Carlos Raúl Villanueva, is a neo-Mudéjar gem. Hotel Jardín, Plaza Bolívar, and the Aeronautical Museum complete the historic tour. Aragua cuisine includes fresh fish on the coast, cacao, and traditional sweets.
