About this destination
La Guaira, capital of the state of the same name (formerly Vargas), is Venezuela's main seaport and the gateway to the Central Coast. This historic port city, founded in 1589, combines a rich colonial heritage with Caribbean beaches and a vibrant Afro-Venezuelan culture. The historic center was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 2019, as an exceptional example of Spanish colonial architecture adapted to the tropics. Cobblestone streets, houses with wooden balconies, and the imposing Casa Guipuzcoana (1734) transport visitors to colonial times. The Central Coast offers a succession of beaches: from the popular Macuto, Camurí Grande, and Los Caracas to the quieter Playa Pantaleta and Puerto Francés. Proximity to Caracas (about 30 minutes by highway) makes the area an ideal escape. Coastal cuisine stands out for fresh seafood, fried fish with tostones, shark empanadas, and ceviche. On weekends the Macuto boardwalk fills with stalls and atmosphere. Afro-Venezuelan culture shines in drum festivities, especially during San Juan (June).
